* House of Representatives convenes despite Iraqiya’s boycott
BAGHDAD, Jan.3 (AKnews)- Today the Iraqi House of Representatives convened to discuss a number of bills after a period of suspension while the Iraqiya List deputies did not attend the session.
Today was the end of a 15-day deadline announced for Iraqiya deputies (91 in the 325-member House) to end their boycott. In the meantime the House did not convene due to lack of required quorum.
Iraqiya List lawmakers and ministers have boycotted sessions in protest to what they have described “lack of real partnership in political process and unilateral ruling in the country.”
Iraqiya List deputies met last night to discuss the prospect of ending the boycott.
Iraqiya with all its components decided not to attend the session of the House of Representatives today and for its ministers [eight ministers] not to attend the sessions of the Council of Ministers, Hamed Mutlag, an al-Iraqiya leader told AKnews.
Iraqiya’s decision came in response “to failure to enforce the demands of the List which led Iraqiya suspend the session,” he said.
Iraqiya’s boycott was announced when the Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki (leading State of Law Coalition) opposed strongly to demands of regional autonomy by Diyala and Salahaddin provincial councils, dominated by Iraqiya deputies.
The tensions between SLC and Iraqiya List, led by Maliki’s elections’ rival Ayad Allawi, rose further when Maliki and court took action against two Iraqiya leaders. Vice President Tareq Hashemi has been issued an arrest order on terrorism charges while the other Iraqiya leader, Deputy PM Saleh Mutlag has been sacked.
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has called for a crisis meeting of the leaders to prevent further deterioration. The meeting is not certain as Iraqiya insists that the issue of his leaders Mutlag and Hashemi should be resolved in the political leader while the Shiite parties including the SLC refuse the condition, regarding it interference in the judiciary authority.
