* Resolution imminent to political crisis
Baghdad, Jan. 7 (AKnews) – The Iraqiya List and the National Coalition said on Saturday that the meetings held during the past few days between the two parties resulted a set of understandings to resolve the political crisis, confirming that the understandings are prior to the National Conference that President Jalal Talabani called for.
Talabani and Council of Representatives’ Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi agreed after they met two days ago to end the escalating media war.
Hamid al-Mutlaq, the senior member of Iraqiya List and deputy prime minister told AKnews that all political parties believe there should be a solution to the current political turmoil and that the current atmosphere will encourage a resolution.
“We found through our discussions that N.C. are serious and recognize the rights of Iraqiya. We hope to find common ground otherwise there will be consequences that may harm everyone. The next few days will see a breakthrough in this political crisis.”
The political tension ratcheted up several notches after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki the issuance of an arrest warrant against Hashemi, according to article 4 terrorism, and sacking Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq from his office after the described Maliki as a dictator.
The N.C. said there are discussions to reach consensus and resolve differences with Iraqiya List.
The spokesman for the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq Hamid Maalla told AKnews the Supreme Committee for the N.C. formed as a consequence of the escalating dispute with the Iraqiya List. “The committee is still continuing its work and they are still conducting dialogues with Iraqiya to identify the problems and develop effective solutions for them.”
All political parties, including Iraqiya List, assert Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi’s case must be resolved by the judiciary away from political interference.
Spokesman for the National Accord Movement Hadi al-Dalimy said: “Iraqiya insists that Hashemi’s case should not be subjected to political discussions, but they must be resolved by the judiciary but on conditions that there must be a fair court hearing away from political pressure.”
Senior Iraqi politicians held talks with Maliki and other leaders to resolve the situation for fear of increasing the crisis that could take Iraq back into sectarian tension .
