08/01/2012 13:51 BAGHDAD, Jan. 8 (AKnews) – A member of the Integrity Committee in the Iraqi Council of Representatives is collecting signatures from members of the Council to demand the Presidency of the Council transfer the Mubarak Port debate from the committees to the Council.

The Foreign Relations Committee and a number of other specialized committees are discussing the report on the effect of the port on Iraqi trade from the Technical Committee delegation that visited Kuwait last year.

Aliya Nassif told AKnews: “Moving the debate to the Council allow all members to give their opinions about it. The report presented by the Committee reflected only the Kuwaiti point of view without the Iraqi one.”

Iraqi experts believe the Port will reduce the significance of Iraqi ports and adversely affect trade, but this was rejected by Kuwait.

Kuwait began work on Mubarak Port in April. It is sighted on the Bubiyan Island, which lies in the far north-west of the Arabian Gulf.

Iraq has threatened to take the affair to the United Nations if the port caused economic damage.

Iraq and Kuwait formed joint committees to resolve the problems existing between them including the demarcation of the border, management of oil fields that cross the border, and especially the problem of war reparations after the Second Persian Gulf War in of 1990/91.

Following the Gulf War the U.N. Security Council put Iraq under Chapter VII sanctions, denoting it a country that threatens global security.

Although both countries opened embassies in the other state, the outstanding problems between them are still present and they lead to periodic tensions in the relationship.
