Hello Everyone!
Here is some further info on “safe” banks from another ratings agency — Weiss Ratings. They assess a lot of different financial institutions, not just banks.
YOU WILL NEED TO REGISTER TO ACCESS THIS DATA (but it is FREE). Then login before you can access the page links below. Some of the financial institutions that Weiss assesses include: annuity insurers, banks and thrifts, credit unions, and a variety of insurers (annuity, business, health, homeowner, etc.).
Here is the link to the database by Weiss Ratings of the strongest U.S. Banks and Thrifts as at 1/28/2012 (check back for updated lists). You can sort the list by name, city, state or rating. http://weissratings.com/sw/?m=s&t=BANK

They say: “The ratings are derived, for the most part, from quarterly financial statements filed with federal regulators….. Weiss Ratings are assigned by our analysts based on a complex analysis of hundreds of factors that are synthesized into five indexes: capitalization, asset quality, profitability, liquidity and stability. These indexes are then used to arrive at a letter grade rating. A good rating requires consistency across all indexes.”
