BAGHDAD – Babinaoz (Reuters) – The United Nations urged Iraq to organize the transfer of the residents of Camp Ashraf Iranians opposed to the new location within the country, and talked about the progress in implementing the agreement in December on the population of the camp. Under the agreement reached on December 25, will move about 3,400 Iranian opposition to the regime in Tehran from Camp Ashraf to a new camp called Camp “Liberty”, as part of a process designed to resettle them outside Iraq. In a statement to the UN mission to help Iraq (UNAMI) that “now is the time for the Iraqi government to organize transportation from Camp Ashraf to the Camp Liberty and other issues with the population,” while “has been taken further steps” towards the Implementation of the agreement.
He said High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Office of UNAMI, “The infrastructure and facilities at Camp Liberty match international humanitarian standards” set forth in the agreement.
“And in addition to that, the UN observers are ready to begin the process of monitoring human rights around the clock through the transfer of the population (Camp Ashraf) and upon arrival to Camp Liberty.”
He continued that “the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the UN is ready to start the determination of refugee status as soon as the arrival to the camp,” a necessary step to be performed before resettlement in other states.
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein allowed the group to establish MEK Camp Ashraf on Iraqi soil during the Iran-Iraq war in the years from 1980 to 1988.
It is located Camp Liberty near Baghdad’s airport at the site was composed of former U.S. military base, according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran shows.
And Iraq, who postponed to April closure of Camp Ashraf and pledged to “provide the security of the population” in the new place to receive them according to the United Nations, did not specify the location of this temporary camp and the date of transfer of the refugees.
The Iraqi authorities decided to close the camp, located in Diyala province before the end of 2011.
